We all know our youth are our Future!

But what are we doing to insure the best future for our sport?

YOUTH PROGRAMS IN AYHA AND REGION III OF AHYA

MembershipPeople under the age of 18 have the opportunity to be members of AHYA for just $15 a year.  You will receive a membership card and a subscription to the Arabian Horse magazine which includes the quarterly youth newsletter Generation Equus which provides information on great youth events and activities for members only.  In addition, members will be eligible to compete in all youth programs, activities and Arabian horse shows.

Your own youth club—You may be in an area with an active youth club.  Your region director or coordinator can help you locate one.  If not, it just takes you and six of your Arabian youth friends to begin the process of starting your own youth club with an existing Arabian horse club.  There are 18 adult clubs in the region and each may have youth members and if they have enough youth members, a youth club.
Scholarships-Region III offers one $2000 scholarship to a high school senior, Region III member each year.   Forms are available on this website.   Nationally, there are several other scholarships available.

The Youth Scholarship Winner for 2005 is Megan Stevenson.
The Region wishes all the best to Megan.

AHYA Convention and Delegates Each summer the entire body of Arabian Horse Youth enthusiasts meet for two fun filled days of meetings and seminars to help formulate policy for the upcoming year as well as to discuss pressing issues. Typically the AHYA presents a united force at the adult AHA convention with superb speeches and well thought out resolutions that can affect the future of your organization.  Region III tends to have 13-15 delegates present at each years convention.

Amateur Achievement Awards A new AHA program that rewards all enrolled youth for competing  in AHA-recognized shows or distance rides with any registered Arabian, Half-Arabian or Anglo-Arabian starting January 1, 2002.  You don’t even have to own the horse (or horses) you compete on since this program tracks the person, not the horse.  There are nine categories of awards.  The program costs $25 to enroll and $20 to renew each year.

Creative Contest Valuable prizes await the winners in photography, art, creative writing, audio/visual and computer-generated projects categories.  Each year there is a new and exciting theme.  Age categories are 13 & Under, 14-17 and 18-21. Deadline each year is June 1, entry forms are available at www.arabianhorses.org and the cost is $10.

Youth Director-Each of the 18 regions of the AHYA elect a youth director to serve at least one year or a maximum of two years on the AHYA Board.  Directors must be in the 14-17 age group.  Directors travel to Denver, Colorado, to the AHYA Convention and to the US National Championship Show for their board meetings and report back to their respective regions accordingly.

Youth Judging—club level-This program is an excellent way for youth to learn the basics of horse show judging by placing classes and then providing oral defense for those placings.  AHA sponsored teams compete with either three or four members.  Region III has had two national champion teams.  Within the region, there are a couple of club teams that compete and do quite well nationally as well.  If you have a couple of friends and would like to develop a team, you can.   A judging DVD is now available and can be purchased from the Arabian Horse Association at www.arabianhorses.org.

Recreational Riding-Whether a veteran or a new rider, recognition can be earned for hours spent with an Arabian horse.  Just log the hours spent trail riding, schooling, going in parades, riding in a drill team, or competing in open shows and events and you can earn patches, caps, T-shirts, windbreakers, fleece jackets, horse coolers, etc.  There is a one-time enrollment fee of $25.

Regional Team Tournament-This program offers youth in each region the opportunity to compete in shows and develop a feeling of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Team members placing in their designated classes accumulate team points throughout the year.  Year-end awards are presented to the highest scoring youth team in each region.  Deadline is May 1st.  $10 per team per section, either AHA or open shows/events.
2003 Winners:  Region 3 AHA Recognized Division Champion – Gold Coast Arabian Horse Association; Reserve Champion Foothill Riders; Region 3 AHA Non Recognized Division Champion – Foothill Riders; Reserve Champion Gold Coast Arabian Horse Association

Regional Championship Show Activities
– For the last few years there have been plenty of activities for youth of all ages at the show in Reno in July.  All week youngsters participated in the scavenger hunt, then on Wednesday there was the stick horse contest, a softball game and dunk tank fundraiser.  On Thursday, the Youth Director held the annual planning meeting for all the youth along with a pizza party.  There has been a very well received silent auction in both 2003 and 2004 with the money going to support our regional youth programs.

Regional activities at the Youth National Championship Show – Each year the Arabian youth convene for a week of hot competition.  Classes exist for the most veteran of competitor and the youngest aged 2-6 in leadline.   The event will continue to be in Albuquerque, New Mexico around the third week of July.  Besides our Region III youth doing well in competition, this show also sports several other events including the Welcome Party, Parade of Regions, Stick Horse Contest, Ice Cream Social, Hippology Contest, and Boot Scoot Dance.  In 2003 Region III won the Parade of Regions where they decorated the golf cart to represent a San Francisco Trolley Car and in 2004 Region III was awarded the spirit award as they were bakers surrounding the Krispy Kreme delivery truck.

Youth of the Year – until 2005 the Youth of the Year has been a nomination process and committee selection.  Beginning in 2005 each region will approve of their nominations before they are passed on to the committee for review.  The recipient of the award may be featured on the cover of an issue of Arabian Horse Magazine, they will receive recognition at the Youth National Championship Show and they will be presented with a perpetual trophy at the AHA convention.  Nomination deadline is September 1st.

Youth Coordinator
- This volunteer position is for an adult interested in the development and future of programs for the youth in the Arabian breed.  It is a very rewarding position and one in which you see many of the youth become bright leaders for not only their position in the region and AHYA, but also in their schools and future careers.  Anyone interested in serving in this position or as a head of one of the youth projects should contact the Region III Director.
